iCloud Storage Full?
Here is How to Fix It
You just got the dreaded "iCloud Storage Almost Full" notification. Apple wants you to pay more. But most of that 200 GB is junk you do not need — old backups, cached files, node_modules synced by mistake. Here is how to fix it.
Why your iCloud is full
Apple silently syncs your Desktop and Documents folders to iCloud. This means every file on your Desktop counts against your iCloud storage — including dev folders with node_modules, .git directories, and build artifacts that can be tens of gigabytes.
Add iCloud backups, Photos, WhatsApp data, and Messages, and you hit 200 GB fast.
How to free up iCloud storage
- Check what is using space — Go to System Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Manage. See the breakdown by category.
- Delete old backups — Old device backups can be 20-50 GB each. Delete backups for devices you no longer own.
- Clean Desktop & Documents — Delete node_modules, .git folders, archives (.zip, .dmg), and large files you do not need synced.
- Handle Photos — Download originals to your Mac first, then turn off iCloud Photos.
- Clear WhatsApp & Messages — On iPhone, WhatsApp > Settings > Storage and Data > Manage Storage.
- Downgrade your plan — Once under 5 GB, go to System Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Manage Plan > Downgrade.
